Kenya, UN and Equity Group agree to develop diaspora investment platform

Kenyans abroad could gain a more structured route into projects at home following a Joint Declaration of Intent signed by the government, the United Nations in Kenya and Equity Group Holdings.

Witnessed during President William Ruto’s New York visit, the declaration concerns a Kenya Diaspora Impact Platform. The proposed platform is intended to connect diaspora investment, expertise and networks with small businesses, community projects, enterprise creation and skills transfer.

Ruto told Kenyans in the United States that their contribution extends beyond remittances. The initiative reflects that wider view of the diaspora as a partner in development.

The declaration establishes an intention to work together. Its success will depend on the platform’s eventual design, the safeguards for participants and the number of viable projects it supports.
