Kangema, Murang’a, Sept. 12 — Fred Matiang’i and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro appeared together at a church event in Kangema on Saturday, fueling fresh speculation over an emerging opposition alliance ahead of the 2027 election.
The pair attended the 33rd edition of a music celebration hosted by the Murang’a Fort Hall Chapter at Kangema SDA Church, a venue roughly 200 metres from the late John Michuki’s homestead, alongside Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni, several MPs and former Senator Kembi Gitura.
Nyoro, who recently quit UDA to lead the People’s Party of Kenya, used the platform to call for opposition unity, declaring, “I want to urge my brothers in the opposition, let us stop wasting Kenyans’ time by fighting among ourselves,” and adding, “We only have one enemy, and that enemy is Ruto.” He described his appearance alongside Matiang’i as “a testimony that opposition leaders will come together,” and named Martha Karua and Peter Munya as part of the coalition taking shape.
Matiang’i, the Jubilee Party’s deputy leader, echoed the call for unity, urging rival opposition figures to “stop name-calling” and to bring together the Democratic Change Party, Linda Mwananchi, the People’s Party of Kenya and other opposition outfits to “chart the way forward.” He also took a swipe at the government’s disaster preparedness, warning, “El Niño is coming. A press statement is not a preparedness plan.”
Neither leader formally declared a political alliance, but the joint appearance was read by attendees as a strong signal of shared purpose. Kembi Gitura called the pairing significant symbolism, while Omogeni tied their message to the everyday cost-of-living struggles facing Kenyans, as pressure builds for opposition ranks to consolidate behind a single front against Ruto ahead of next year’s polls.
