Nairobi will host the East African Regional Office of United Cities and Local Governments of Africa following a Host Country Agreement signed during the UNGA engagements.
The agreement followed a Kenya-convened discussion on climate resilience for people living in African cities. That discussion linked rapid urban growth with housing, infrastructure and the risks faced by poorer communities during climate shocks.
A regional office in Nairobi gives the organisation a base from which to work with local governments across East Africa. It also adds to the concentration of international and regional institutions operating from Kenya’s capital.
The agreement is an institutional gain; the practical results will depend on the office’s programmes and the support it provides to cities.
