Maua, Sept. 18 — A man died on Wednesday night after a swarm of bees attacked him as he tried to shelter inside a pit latrine in Miori village, Maua location, Meru County, according to preliminary police accounts.
The incident is reported to have occurred at around 9 p.m. on September 16, when the man, whose identity had not been officially released by press time, is said to have disturbed a beehive near a homestead in the area. Fleeing the swarm, he is understood to have locked himself inside an outdoor toilet in an attempt to escape the insects, but the bees are said to have followed him through gaps in the structure and stung him repeatedly.
An elder in the village reportedly discovered his body the following morning after neighbours raised the alarm over the unusual swarming activity around the toilet. Police officers and Crime Scene Investigation personnel are said to have visited the scene to document the incident before the body was moved to Nyambene Level 5 Hospital mortuary, where it was awaiting a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
Preliminary indications point to anaphylactic shock or the cumulative effect of multiple stings as the likely cause, though authorities cautioned that this could only be confirmed once autopsy results are available. Investigations into the incident, including how the beehive came to be disturbed, are said to be ongoing.
Bee attacks resulting in fatalities remain relatively rare in Kenya but are not unheard of, particularly in parts of Meru and the wider Mount Kenya region where beekeeping is common and hives are often kept close to homesteads. Public health officials have in the past urged residents to exercise caution around apiaries, especially during the evening hours when bees are known to be more defensive of their colonies.
Area residents are reported to have expressed shock at the incident, with some calling for beekeepers to relocate hives further from residential areas and shared pathways to prevent similar tragedies. No further details on funeral arrangements had been released by the time of publishing.
