Kenya establishes diplomatic relations with Solomon Islands during UNGA

NEW YORK, September 29, 2026 — Kenya has established formal diplomatic relations with the Solomon Islands, marking a new step in its engagement with countries in the Pacific.

The two countries signed a joint communiqué during the UN General Assembly meetings in New York. Kenya’s delegation also concluded political consultation agreements with the Maldives, North Macedonia, Croatia and Trinidad and Tobago.

The agreements create channels for regular discussions on bilateral cooperation and issues before international organisations. They broaden Kenya’s diplomatic relationships at a time when the country is seeking stronger partnerships across regions.

President William Ruto’s UNGA programme included meetings with leaders from Africa and beyond on trade, investment, air connectivity and international reform. The new agreements add a formal basis for continued engagement with five countries represented in different parts of the world.

Kenya’s expanded diplomatic network can support cooperation on shared priorities and give the country more opportunities to build partnerships through international forums.
